George R. R. Martin Says "3 New "Game of Thrones" Animated Series Are In Progress"

"Game of Thrones" writer George R. R. Martin wrote a new blog post complimenting the work of Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, after watching Netflix's animated series "Blue Eye Samurai."

And because Martin was feeling kind, he chose to share some information about his own future plans to pursue animation.

“‘Blue Eye Samurai’s’ very much its own thing, and it is magnificent,” Martin wrote. “Even if you don’t normally watch animation, give it a try. It’s terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you’ll love it.”

The writer then pivoted to his current work.

“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of ‘A Song Of Ice & Fire.’ None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.”

The Westeros father disclosed that four animated series proposals he had previously submitted to HBO were in development.

The "Game of Thrones" animated series news was first reported by Variety  in 2021. Martin went on to say that multiple writers rooms, scripts, and ideas had been produced; sadly, two of the four projects were, in Martin's words, "shelved."

Game of Thones Spinoff : Sea Snake

Martin revealed that he will also be pursuing animation for his previously announced Sea Snake  series, even as he labors on the two animated projects that remain.

“We have moved ‘Nine Voyages,’ our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”

The titles and storylines of the two enigmatic animated projects are yet unknown. For years, there have been rumors about several "Game of Thrones" spinoff projects, such as the "10,000 Ships" and "Flea Bottom" television shows.

Variety revealed in April of last year that a prequel concerning Aegon I Targaryen's invasion of Westeros was being developed and that a television series called "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight" had been ordered.

It remains to be seen if any of these storylines relate to the animated series Martin is talking about.

In the meantime, "House of Dragon" season two is scheduled to debut in the early summer of 2024.
